he Michigan State University Board of Trustees just passed by a 5-3 vote a resolution to sanction trustees who publicly question any decisions made by the Board. This alarming edict is antithetical to AFSA’s core mission of promoting free speech, academic freedom, and viewpoint diversity on university campuses. A dissenting minority Board member issued a public statement that succinctly criticizes the vote: “This is something that is absolutely an assault on the First Amendment of any person who is serving in any sort of elected capacity and an assault on the governance capability of those of us who might be in the minority at any given time.”

I think this resolution ought to be condemned by AFSA.
